Proper Care For Long-Lasting Marble Floors

1. Clean Spills Right Away

You already know how red wine and coffee can stain any surface, so you’re probably quick to clean it with a towel. You should be just as quick to clean up other spills on your marble floor if you want to prevent staining.

Even clear liquids can attract dirt and cause them to adhere to the surface. Clean up spills as soon as they happen with a rag and appropriate cleaner to keep your floors sparkling clean.

2. Dust & Sweep Regularly

Dirt and dust can accumulate on your marble floors, leading to staining and dulling. One of the easiest things you can do to protect your floors is to dust and sweep them regularly. Use a Swiffer or a dry mop to remove dust, or use a broom to clean larger particles on the floor. Dust or sweep every day, if needed.

3. Use Soft Sponges & Clothes

Only use a soft cloth or sponge for deeper cleaning. Using harsh cloths can scratch the floors or wear down the surface. Use the softer materials when cleaning up spills or when doing regular mopping. You’ll keep the floors free of dirt and give them a nice shine.

4. Maintain The Sealer

While the sealer will keep dirt and stains off your marble floors, it doesn’t last forever. It has to be reapplied periodically to remain effective. You should re-seal the marble floors once a year or so. Consult with a professional about the right maintenance schedule, and hire a tile and grout cleaning company to perform the sealing.

5. Polish The Floors

Polishing the marble will give it a beautiful and lasting shine. Make sure that you are using the appropriate product for the marble or you risk scratching the stone.

Effective Marble Floor Polishing Techniques

Now that you understand the basics of care, let’s delve into polishing techniques to ensure long-lasting shine.

How To Polish Marble Floors By Hand

You should avoid conventional cleaners because they are usually too abrasive for marble. Another thing to consider is the type of marble, as it influences the polishing techniques. Take note of the following recommendations:

  • If you have natural marble, you can remove stains with a damp sponge, and pH-balanced soap. Rub the sponge gently and rinse with water afterward. For deeper stains, use a poultice. You can use a nylon bristle brush to clean the surface if you have cultured marble, but remember to use a mild household cleaner.
  • To polish it, mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 quart of water and use a clean cloth to apply the mixture evenly across the surface. Wait 5 hours to dry.
  • Once the natural marble is dry, gently wipe it off with another clean cloth and add a sealant if you want. Cultured marble dries easier and doesn’t need further care.

How To Polish Marble With A Polishing Machine

You can polish your marble floor with specific equipment, including different sizes of diamond polishing pads and an electric sanding machine. We recommend wearing working gloves, safety goggles, and a face mask to prevent hand and eye damage.

Follow these steps to polish your marble using a sanding machine:

  • Use cold and clean water to cover the surface
  • Attach the sandpaper’s coarsest grit to the electric polishing machine
  • Move the polishing machine in a side-to-side motion four times to remove the wax residue.
  • Vacuum the floor to ensure you don’t miss any spots.
  • Repeat the same motion process, but use less coarse grits as you progress until your marble gets the shine you want.
  • Add marble plaster to the grit on the last pass.
  • Clean the floor with a mop.
